Best Practices
for Getting Hired

  • Apply online and also visit the business in person
  • Ask to speak with a manager when you visit
  • Go between breakfast and lunch when businesses are less busy
  • Dress neatly such as wearing a polo shirt
  • Bring a printed resume
  • Make eye contact and speak clearly
  • Offer a firm handshake
  • Be polite and respectful
  • Apply to multiple jobs, not just one
  • Write a thank you note to the person you interviewed with 
  • Follow up in a week or town with the person you interviewed with.

City of Memphis MPLOY Program

Ages 14-22

Paid summer jobs with Memphis employers.  About 6 weeks, up to 20 hours per week

Simple Script:

I am very interested in working here.  I am reliable, willing to learn, and available this summer.  I would love the opportunity to apply.

for High School Students
