Each year, M.O.S.T. proudly identifies up to ten rising 9th graders from our Partner Schools to receive the M.O.S.T. McDonnell Scholarship. These students demonstrate not only academic excellence but also strong leadership, character, and the kind of commitment that sets them apart as future leaders.
The McDonnell Scholarship is an add-on to the general M.O.S.T. Scholarships for those already receiving it or acts as a stand-alone award for new recipients. Valued at up to $2,500 annually, this scholarship is more than financial support--it's recognition of potential and promise.
To qualify, students must submit recommendations from both their English and math teachers, complete a standardized test and writing assignment, and participate in an interview with members of the M.O.S.T. staff and board.
The most inspiring part of the selection process is the interview. While test scores and applications provide insight, nothing compares to meeting the students face-to-face. As staff, we're always amazed by how much more we learn about each student during this time.
For a rising 9th grader, walking into an interview with multiple adults can be understandably intimidating. But what begins as a nerve-wracking experience quickly transforms into something special: a conversation that reveals each student's unique perspective, quiet strength, and dreams for the future.
Some students are naturally talkative, others more reserved-but each brings something authentic and invaluable to the table. And every year, we walk away reminded that Memphis is full of brilliant, compassionate, and driven young people who are ready to lead.
