Her Daughter's Story, Their Shared Dream for a Brighter Memphis

When Leticia Mendoza reflects on her youngest daughter, Victoria's journey to college, she's overcome with pride- not just in the milestone itself, but in the strength, independence, and moral clarity her daughter demonstrates every day.

Victoria, a recent graduate of St. Agnes and a M.O.S.T. Scholar, is now beginning her college journey at the University of Memphis. Victoria is the youngest of three sisters in a close-knit family that emigrated from Jalisco, Mexico. Growing up, she was surrounded by love, hard work, and determination.

"She's very independent," Leticia said. "She signed herself up for classes, set up her dorm, scheduled appointments with her counselor-she did everything on her own." Leticia describes Victoria as organized, responsible, and deeply principled. "She has a strong moral compass and always stands for what is right."

Victoria's achievements are the result of both her own efforts and her family's commitment. Leticia first learned about M.O.S.T. more than 15 years ago while working at a preschool. A simple flyer caught her attention, and with encouragement from a colleague, she applied for her children. At the time, very few families in the Latino community knew about the program, and Leticia made it her mission to spread the word. "I always tell parents, just try. Don't be afraid. Ask questions. This program can change your child's life."

Thanks to the M.O.S.T. Scholarship, Leticia's daughters attended private schools-an opportunity she says would not have been financially possible otherwise. "Even $300 a month adds up quickly when you have more than one child. The scholarships lifted that burden." Leticia also emphasized the importance of letting children grow into their independence when they go to college. Her advice to other parents? "Don't walk in front of them, and don't stay behind. Walk beside them. Let them make their own decisions, learn from their mistakes, and discover who they are. You're still there, but they are the ones growing."

As Victoria steps into the next chapter, she's exploring a potential future in optometry, with an open mind and the confidence to change paths as needed. She's also inherited her father's beautiful singing voice-a gift Leticia hopes she'll explore while in school, even if it is just for fun. "I always tell her, college is a place to discover everything you couldn't try before. Whether it's singing, traveling, or learning something new, just do it."

Leticia's story is more than just one of a proud parent. It's a testament to the power of opportunity, community, and belief in our children's potential. Her words echo a sentiment shared by many M.O.S.T. families: gratitude for support, faith in the future, and the desire to give back. "We received so much. Now it's our turn to help others however we can."

Leticia and Victoria's journey is a beautiful reflection of what M.O.S.T. stands for- empowering students, supporting families, and building a brighter Memphis, one scholar at a time.
