Private Schools in Memphis
When you total up all of the independent and parochial schools in Memphis, the number of private schools is somewhere around 80, which is fairly significant for a city our size. Many of these schools offer at least limited financial assistance, and some offer very significant financial help.
Independent Schools
In Memphis, around thirty schools are members of the Memphis Association of Independent Schools (MAIS). The 2010-2011 president of MAIS, Bill Taylor, defines independent schools as "independent of state regulations regarding certain standards pertaining to public schools. Independent schools have rigorous standards that are based, in part, on each school’s mission and philosophy, and also in accordance with a regional independent school association."
Many, but certainly not all, of the independent schools in Memphis have a religious component. There are Jewish schools, a Muslim school, and Christian schools of many types, including those that are non-denominational and those that are part of a certain denomination. Most denominational schools do not require that their students are members of that denomination, and the influence of the denomination on the school's curriculum and programs varies greatly from school to school.
Parochial Schools
In Memphis, the term "parochial schools" generally refers to Catholic schools. The schools of the Catholic Diocese of Memphis are widely considered to be strong schools that serve a diverse student population, including many non-Catholics. They tend to be socio-economically and ethnically diverse, as well. The Jubilee Schools, in particular, offer a high level of financial aid to qualifying families, and are located in urban areas.
